Number of medical uses of Particle and Heavy Ion Transport code System (PHITS) has been increased due to the recent high demands of medical use of radiations. The summary of such research works was described in the review article on medical application of Particle and Heavy Ion Transport code System PHITS published in Radiological Physics and Technology in 2021. There was a request from the editorial board of Japan Society of Medical Physics (JSMP) for writing an introductory article of this article in their internal journal. The research works on medical applications described in the review article, useful functions for medical application in PHITS, and newly opened user forum of PHITS have been introduced.

Medical application of Particle and Heavy Ion Transport code System PHITS

Number of the PHITS users has steadily increased since 2010 from when it is officially counted. Among them, increase of new users in medical physics is outstanding. Many research works in medical physics using PHITS have been published and the applications are widely spread in different fields such as applications to different types of radiotherapy, shielding calculations of medical facilities, application to radiation biology, and research and development of medical tools. In this article, we will introduce useful functions for medical application in PHITS by referring to examples of various medical applications.

Reconstruction of residents' thyroid equivalent doses from internal radionuclides after the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station accident

Internal doses of residents after the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station accident have been reconstructed. In total 896 behaviour records in the Fukushima Health Management Survey were analysed to estimate thyroid doses via inhalation, using a spatiotemporal radionuclides concentration database constructed by atmospheric dispersion simulations. After a decontamination factor for sheltering and a modifying factor for the dose coefficient were applied, estimated thyroid doses were close to those estimated on the basis of direct thyroid measurement. The median and 95th percentile of thyroid doses of 1-year-old children ranged from 1.2 to 15 mSv and from 7.5 to 30 mSv, respectively.

Study on innovative HTGR to reduce generation of potential radiotoxicity

A study on innovative High Temperature Gas-cooled Reactor (HTGR) to reduce generation of potential radiotoxicity had been performed. Unlike the Fast Breeder Reactor (FBR) and Accelerated Driven System (ADS), which can confine radioactive nuclides into its fuel cycle as multi-recycling and transmute, in this study we attempt to reduce the generation of the radiotoxicity itself by preventing the generation of Pu and MA, which is generated with the energy generation. In this context, we proposed the innovative HTGR that employs the Highly Enriched Uranium (HEU) fuel by removing $$^{238}$$U : source of the Pu and MA. However, there are the problems of fuel integrity, nuclear proliferation, nuclear self-regulation characteristics, and economy of electricity generation which are caused by employing HEU. For these problems, we investigated and proposed the solutions. Especially for the nuclear self-regulation characteristics, which were improved by adding Er, the optimized nuclear design was quantitatively determined and elucidated by the Bondarenko approach. As a result, it was confirmed that the proposed reactor can solves these problem for employing HEU fuel and the high specification and economy as same as those of standard HTGR fueled uranium.

Hydrothermal chloritization processes from biotite in the Toki granite, Central Japan; Temporal variations of the compositions of hydrothermal fluids associated with chloritization

This paper describes the biotite chloritization process with a focus on mass transfer in the Toki granitic pluton, Central Japan, and also depicts the temporal variations in chemical characteristics of hydrothermal fluid associated with chloritization during the sub-solidus cooling of the pluton. Singular value decomposition (SVD) analysis results in chloritization reaction equations for eight mineral assemblages, leading to the quantitative assessment of mass transfer between the reactant and product minerals, and inflow and outflow of components through the hydrothermal fluid. The matrices for SVD analysis consist of arbitrary combinations of molar volume and closure component in the reactant and product minerals. The eight reactions represent the temporal variations of chemical characteristics of the hydrothermal fluid associated with chloritization: the progress of chloritization results in gradual increase of silicon, potassium and chlorine and gradual decrease of calcium and sodium in the hydrothermal fluid with temperature decrease. The biotite chloritization involves two essential formation processes: Formation Process 1, small volume decrease from biotite to chlorite and large inflow of metallic ions from the hydrothermal fluid, and Formation Process 2, large volume decrease and large outflow of metallic ions into hydrothermal fluid. Chlorite produced during Formation Process 1 dominates over that of Formation Process 2, resulting in the gradual decrease of metallic components in the hydrothermal fluid with chloritization progress. The combination of continuous reactions based on compositional variations in chlorite together with corresponding continuous Al$$^{IV}$$ variations gives an indication of the temporal variations in rates of decreasing and increasing concentration of chemical components in the hydrothermal fluid associated with chloritization.

A Preliminary design of the beam transport line for the K900 superconducting AVF cyclotron

A new project aiming a breakthrough in biotechnology and materials science has been proposed at TIARA (Takasaki Ion Accelerators for Advanced Radiation Application) facilities of JAERI. We have started designing a K900 superconducting AVF cyclotron (K900 SCC). The beam transport line for JAERI K900 SCC has been designed preliminary for heavy ion beams with an energy of more than a hundred MeV/n. An achromatic beam transport system has been designed for high transmission efficiency of ion beams and good adjustability of magnet parameters using the computer code “TRANSPORT".

A new project aiming for a breakthrough in biotechnology and materials science has been proposed at TIARA(Takasaki Ion Accelerators for Advanced Radiation Application) facilities of JAERI. Heavy ion beams with an energy of more than a hundred MeV/n will contribute to remarkable progress in breeding of plants and development of new materials. We have started designing a new superconducting AVF cyclotron with a bending limit of 900 and a focusing limit of 300. The cyclotron magnet is being designed to cope with acceleration of both the heavy ions and 300 MeV protons.
